The Rose is Red, the Violet's Blue

Happy Chap Goh Meh

February 14 this year is a double celebration for lovebirds.  The special day for lovebirds coincides with the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, which is also the last day of the celebration. Some refer to Chap Goh Meh, the 15th night as the Chinese Valentine's Day due to the local tradition of tossing mandarin oranges into the sea in search of love. The tradition, originated in Penang, Malaysia, was an occasion for unmarried women to toss the oranges in the hope that the fruits would be picked up by eligible young men who would be their future spouse.
Good luck ladies and may your Valentine pick your oranges tonight!!

The rose is red, the violet's blue,
The honey's sweet, and so are you.

Thou art my love and I am thine;

I drew thee to my Valentine:

The lot was cast and then I drew,

And Fortune said it should be you...

  1. Hi Angie, love this posting. The whole world today celebrates Valentin's day, and the one day red roses flying off shelves.
    Pity the tradition of throwing oranges into the sea or river only in Penang, Malacca, and Singapore.
    I think I should introduce this to Canadians here in Toronto, only thing is someone with a h/phone might take a snap, send it to the Environment authorities and I'll be slapped with a 3 months eat porridge fine, ha ha ha.
    Fool around with drugs, get a slap on the wrist. Dirty the environment, is chari pasal big time.

    Happy holidays to you, and may your life always be a Valentine day.
    Stay young, stay beautiful.
    Lee.
