ON BEING A BEAUTY PAGEANT JUDGE...

On May the 1st, I was invited to be one of the Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan (UNK) Beauty Pageant judges. This was in conjunction with the launching of the month-long statewide Harvest Festival celebrations celebrated annually in Sabah.  Launched by the Chief Minister, Kota Belud district was chosen to be the host for this year's celebration.  The winner of the UNK here will represent the district in the State Level competition held on 31st May 2013 at the Hongkod Koisaan KDCA, Penampang.

It is always a challenge to choose a winner as some of the girls are really beautiful with sparkling smiles, looking resplendent in their traditional costumes and deserving to win too.  As there can only be one winner, others  would of course be disappointed.  I do receive the odd request for so and so to win. Well, too bad, they ask the wrong person.  A contestant may be my best friend's daughter but if I feel she doesn't deserve to win, then she doesn't.  The end-results of course must be a consensus by the panel of judges (usually 5) and audited by an independent person.

I feel that it is an honour to be invited as a judge for any event. That shows people actually acknowledge your opinion. My experiences as a beauty pageants' judge, be it for just a small fashion show, or pageants held by higher institutions of learning as in colleges or universities or Unduk Ngadau competition at district level,  never fail to diminish my fascination for girls who vie for these beauty titles. Some girls jump from district to another district, from one pageant to another to compete. Or perhaps they are attracted by the prizes? But I do admire their courage for without them, then there would not be any competition.

The prizes can be quite lucrative and cash prizes can run up to the thousands of ringgits, normally offered by generous corporate sponsors.  For last year's state level winner, the total amount prizes was valued at almost RM70,000.00! This included cash prizes, scholarship to do a Diploma Course,  trips overseas,  jewelry, smart phones with free reloads for a year,  trophy, tiara and lots more!

UNK judges hard at work  :)

We, as the State Level UNK organiser, of course try our best to look for credible judges. The appointment of judges for State Level UNK competition is usually given a lot of thought.  He or she should be someone known to have integrity, have some social standing in society or someone knowledgeable, experienced or involved in aesthetics beauty. And if it involves traditional costumes, then at least one judge should be knowledgeable on the traditional costumes.  We also try to ensure that the judges do not have any personal ties with the contestants. The line-up should be from diverse background, geographically distributed and have different professions and that they should have some experience in appraising the ideals of the pageant.  This would eliminate if not all some degree of biases.

To the UNK 2013 participants, good luck to all of you. May the winner be the best girl that can truly symbolize the virtuous Huminodun and worthy of the title "Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan"!

Cheers!!

  1. Hi Flawless, ooo jadi judge beauty queen ya?, memang zaman sekarang susah nak pilih,,semua cantik2 kan..girls dah pandai look after their skin, proper makeup and wise too when interviewed..unlike zaman kita dulu, malu, hanya duduk di ceruk dapor..di kawal rapi oleh mak ayah...when I was 25 still tak tau makeup, only lipstick je..bila dah masak ranum, dah jadi nenek baru tau sikit2 letak itu ini...anyway.tahniah,those girls were superb..

  2. Hi dear gorgeous IM
haha..mula2 tu bila kita disuruh jadi judge, risau juga takut tersalah pilih kan. Nanti org akan mengata apa lah judge ni macam takde mata.yg cantik tak dipilih, yang tak cantik pula dipilih hehehe..macam2. maklumlah mata manusia tak sama kan. Tapi so far, ok lah lah. my pengalaman most of the times yang dipilih slalu memuaskan cewaahh...haha.. Tapikan, kesian ada setengah tu.. macam gila nak join beauty contest tapi langsung takde beauty pun. I pula kesian. Dah makeup elok2 pun masih tak lawa especially those with kulit yang tak sekata.. haishhh..

  5. Hi Angie, congratulation to you. It must be a great honor to be invited as a beauty queen judge. Very good experience. Contest is contest, it should be fair deal.... just don't understand some people willing to lower their self and make an embarrassing request for the sake of wining the title. Some people can be so thick skinned.

But pity for those contestants who being 'boo' by spectators. But that's bad, don't like just keep quite lah. I wander how they feel standing on stage and being boo and pass sarcastic remarks. But sad to say there are some girls really crazy wanted so much to be a beauty queen or actress but did not look at mirror first or ask second opinion. But then there some really cannot take it if people comment that they are not pretty. Well, pretty or ugly we have to accept for who we are and what we are...

    Best regards. *hugs*

    2. Hi Amelia, yes it is always an honour to be invited as judge for any event. The first time I did which was several years ago was a little daunting haha.. I was invited to judge a beauty pageant a University and I was shocked at so many beautiful ladies and it was quite difficult to choose. Lucky my fellow judges were experienced.

And then I gasped at some who has no beauty queen material at all..aiyooo. Some so obviously overweight and can see spare tyres everywhere, some are so short and when standing besides the 5'7" contestants, it looked quite comical. Yeah, I agree with you as I commented same thing 'wonder what kind of mirror they have at home?' hehe.. Maybe they have snow white's mirror hehe.. kesian kan, 'cos some audience can be so cruel too. :( and I really feel sorry and sad for these girls.

thanks for dropping by dear. Have a lovely day..hugs.

  6. Tough assignment I suppose. Every year people blame the judges for the result they came out with, esp at the State Level. But like what you mentioned on the criteria for the judging panel, I believe every angle of the participant's presentation wouldve been taken care of.

    All the best!

  7. that's true and especially for the year 2011 results. So many negative comments were spread out especially through the popular social network Facebook. Lies and accusations were spread blatantly. That was quite tough for the winner. Thank goodness she had many supporters as well. Last year was not too bad but a disgruntle a few cannot be avoided. Well, we can't please everyone. That's the name of the game, some win and some lose.

  9. Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this blog. It's simple, yet effective.
A lot of times it's difficult to get that "perfect balance" between user friendliness and visual appeal. I must say you have done a superb job with this. In addition, the blog loads super quick for me on Opera. Excellent Blog!
